Here's how to take Wegovy pill doses so your body absorbs them

Only 1% to 2% of each Wegovy tablet is absorbed, so the morning routine matters. Here's what the FDA label says about water, the 30 minute wait, the 1.5 mg to 25 mg ladder, the 64 week trial results and what the tablets cost.

Only about 1% to 2% of the semaglutide in each tablet ever reaches your bloodstream, according to the FDA label, so the small rules around the morning dose carry real weight. If you're working out how to take Wegovy pill doses on a prescriber's plan, the routine itself is the part you control: an empty stomach, a small sip of water, and a 30 minute wait.

Novo Nordisk's tablet won FDA approval on December 22, 2025, and it's the same molecule as the weekly pen, just swallowed daily. Below is what the Wegovy prescribing information actually says about timing, the dose ladder, trial results and cost, so you know what to ask your prescriber about. Redose is built for tracking and record-keeping only, and none of this replaces their instructions.

How to take Wegovy pill doses each morning

The label is unusually specific here. Take one tablet once daily on an empty stomach in the morning, with up to 4 ounces of plain water. Coffee, tea, juice and sparkling water are all out until later, because the label says not to take the tablet with any liquid besides water.

Then you wait. The label asks for at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other oral medications. Swallow the tablet whole, too; it shouldn't be split, crushed, chewed or dissolved.

  • One tablet per day, never two to make up for a lapse
  • Up to 4 ounces of water, roughly half a standard cup
  • No coffee, tea or other drinks with the tablet
  • Wait 30 minutes before food, drinks or other pills
  • Swallow whole, with no splitting, crushing or chewing

In a 10 day pharmacology study cited on the label, semaglutide absorption was higher after a longer fasting period following the dose, tested at 15, 30, 60 and 120 minutes.

Why the water and the wait matter

Oral semaglutide is paired with an absorption enhancer called salcaprozate sodium (SNAC) that helps the peptide cross the stomach lining, and peak blood levels arrive about 1 hour after the dose. In a single dose study, absorption was higher with 50 mL of water than with 240 mL. A later study found no meaningful gap between 50 mL and 120 mL, which is why the label settles on 4 ounces as the ceiling.

What a busy morning does to the routine

Most people who struggle with the tablet don't forget it. They take it, then reach for coffee 10 minutes later. If your mornings are rushed, it can help to set the tablet out with a glass of water the night before and to log the time you swallowed it, so the 30 minute mark isn't a guess.

The Wegovy pill dosage ladder from 1.5 mg to 25 mg

Wegovy tablets start low and climb in 30 day steps to limit nausea and other stomach effects. The label lists four strengths, 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg, each sold as a bottle of 30 tablets.

Label daysDaily doseCash price
Days 1 to 301.5 mg$149 per month
Days 31 to 604 mg$199 per month
Days 61 to 909 mg$299 per month
Day 91 onward25 mg maintenance$299 per month

If a step isn't tolerated, the label says a prescriber may consider delaying the next increase. If 25 mg isn't tolerated at all, it points to switching to the 1.7 mg weekly injection instead. Those calls belong to your clinician, so it's worth logging nausea, appetite and energy at each step to bring to the appointment.

If you miss a tablet

The rule is simpler than the pen's. If a dose of Wegovy tablets is missed, the label says to skip it and take the next one the following day, never two at once. For comparison, a missed weekly injection follows a 2 day window rule, which we cover in our missed dose guide.

Switching between the pen and the tablet

The label maps a direct swap. Someone on the 2.4 mg weekly injection can start 25 mg tablets one week after their last shot. Going the other way, the 2.4 mg injection starts the day after the last 25 mg tablet. Any switch is a prescriber decision, and it's easy to lose track of the handover week without a written log.

  1. Note the date of the last weekly injection
  2. Mark day 7 after it, when the label starts tablets
  3. Record the first tablet time and the 30 minute mark
  4. Log side effects daily for the first two weeks

Wegovy pill results in the 64 week trial

The label's tablet trial, published as OASIS 4, followed 307 adults with obesity or overweight plus at least one weight related condition; people with type 2 diabetes were excluded. After 64 weeks, the 205 people on 25 mg tablets lost an average of 13.6% of body weight versus 2.4% on placebo.

Lost 10% or more59.8%14.4%
Lost 15% or more47.0%5.5%
Lost 20% or more27.9%3.1%

Side effects tracked the injection closely. The label says the types and frequency of common reactions were similar to the pen's, where nausea hit 44% of people on 2.4 mg versus 16% on placebo. In the tablet trial, 6.9% stopped because of adverse reactions compared with 5.9% on placebo, mostly from stomach problems.

Blood levels from the tablet vary more than from the pen: 90% of patients fell between 27 and 186 nmol/L on 25 mg tablets, versus 51 and 110 nmol/L on the 2.4 mg injection.

Why type 2 diabetes changes the picture

In people without diabetes, average semaglutide levels on 25 mg tablets were similar to the weekly 2.4 mg pen. In people with type 2 diabetes, the label says levels were lower and some may end up below the useful range. That's one reason oral semaglutide for weight loss may suit some people better than others, and it's a question to raise with a prescriber.

  • Average loss of 13.6% at 64 weeks on 25 mg tablets
  • Nearly half of tablet users lost 15% or more
  • 6.9% quit for side effects, versus 5.9% on placebo
  • Lower blood levels reported in type 2 diabetes

What the tablet costs compared with the weekly pen

Here's where the daily format pays off for cash buyers. Through NovoCare Pharmacy, the tablets cost $149 for a month of 1.5 mg, $199 for 4 mg and $299 for 9 mg or 25 mg. The pen runs $349 a month at any maintenance strength once its introductory offer of $199 for the first two fills ends.

Do the math on a first year at list cash prices. Tablets come to $149 + $199 + $299, then nine more months at $299, for $3,338. The pen, with two $199 intro fills followed by ten months at $349, totals $3,888. That's about $550 saved, or close to $10 a day for the 25 mg tablet. Our Wegovy savings card breakdown covers the insured route, where some people pay as little as $25.

A bottle of 30 tablets of 25 mg at $299 works out to just under $10 per dose, and every skipped or poorly absorbed morning is money spent for little drug.

  • 1.5 mg tablets: $149 for a 30 tablet bottle
  • 9 mg and 25 mg tablets: $299 per month
  • Pen maintenance: $349 per month after intro fills
  • Year one estimate: $3,338 tablets versus $3,888 pen

Wegovy weight loss pills next to other oral GLP-1 options

Wegovy weight loss pills aren't the only daily option anymore. Rybelsus, the oral Ozempic sibling, uses the same semaglutide and SNAC pairing for type 2 diabetes, and our Rybelsus explainer walks through its doses. On April 1, 2026, the FDA approved Eli Lilly's orforglipron, sold as Foundayo.

Orforglipron is a different kind of oral GLP-1, a small molecule rather than a peptide, and its label carries no food or water restrictions, according to Pharmacy Times. In the 72 week ATTAIN-1 trial, the 36 mg dose produced about 11.2% weight loss. So the choice of GLP-1 pill can come down to whether a strict morning routine fits your life.

Storage, other pills and what to log

Unlike the pen, the tablets don't need the fridge. The label says to store them at 68°F to 77°F, with brief excursions from 59°F to 86°F allowed, and to keep them in the original bottle until use to protect them from moisture. Pill organizers are out.

Other morning medications need planning too. In a drug interaction study, oral semaglutide raised levothyroxine exposure by 33%, and the label suggests closer monitoring for drugs with a narrow therapeutic window. If you take a thyroid pill first thing, ask your prescriber how to sequence the two. You can keep exact numbers for injectable doses in the Redose calculators.

Common questions about the Wegovy tablet

Can I drink coffee after taking the Wegovy pill?

Yes, but the label asks you to wait at least 30 minutes after the tablet before drinking anything other than the small amount of water you took it with. Coffee before that point is exactly what the label rules out.

Is oral semaglutide as effective as the injection?

In the 64 week trial, 25 mg tablets produced 13.6% average weight loss, and average blood levels were similar to the 2.4 mg pen in people without diabetes. Levels varied more from person to person, and they ran lower in type 2 diabetes, so results may differ.

Is there a Novo Nordisk weight loss pill without fasting rules?

Not yet. Every oral semaglutide product from Novo Nordisk carries the empty stomach and 30 minute rules. Lilly's orforglipron is the approved oral GLP-1 that skips them.

What happens if I eat before 30 minutes?

The label doesn't say a single early meal is dangerous, but its pharmacology data show less semaglutide absorbed with shorter fasting after the dose. If it happens often, log it and raise it with your prescriber rather than doubling up.
